Instruction in elementary spoken and written Chinese (Mandarin), beginning with the sounds of Chinese and their representation in the pinyin romanization system. Conversation, structural analysis, and an introduction to character texts. The first-year sequence (1-2-3) begins only in the fall quarter. Students interested in learning Chinese who are uncertain about where they should enter the sequence should meet with the instructor prior to the first class meeting. Close readings in Chinese vernacular literature of recognized merit from contemporary and modern writers as wells as from models from the traditional period. Student are introduced to the basic critical issues, in Chinese, relating to narrative and drama, revealed by the works under discussion.
Offers an appreciation of some of the central issues in Chinese history as defined by Chinese historians of the 20th century. Through readings of graduated difficulty, the vocabulary, style, and form of modern Chinese historical writing are introduced.
