Introduces students to how mathematical models can be used to ask and answer evolutionary and ecological questions. Methods covered include optimality theory, population genetics, population dynamic models, game theory, and dynamic state-variable models. Students learn to develop their own mathematical models and to use models to make predictions. Statistical methods for combining theory and data are not covered. This class focuses on learning by doing, using in class activities, weekly problem sets and an independent project. Students cannot receive credit for this course and BIOE 138. Hands-on exploration of the concepts and techniques of plant ecology.
