HIS 258A Zionism and Its Critics
Zionism is one of the most complex—and heavily contested—political and ideological movements of the modern period. To its supporters, Zionism has represented the national liberation movement of the Jewish people, a haven for Jews against antisemitism, including the Holocaust, an opportunity to establish a socialist state at the vanguard of worldwide revolution, a vehicle for Jewish cultural renaissance, and/or a crucial stage in God’s messianic plan. To its critics, Zionism has represented a form of racism and settler colonialism that has led to the oppression of Palestinians including the Nakba, an internalization of antisemitism, a reactionary betrayal of socialist ideals, and/or the heretical substitution of nationalism for Judaism.
