MUSC 80K Listening to the Environment

Introduces the transformative potential of sound and listening in times of environmental change. Studies the role of sound in artistic creation and scientific research related to the environment. The course explores sound in a variety of thematic modules, teaches different ways of listening and provides a hands-on introduction to the fundamentals of recording, composing, editing, and analyzing scientific recordings. Weekly online discussion forums engage students in sound studies that include listening as activism; an introduction to environmental sound; and an interdisciplinary lecture series on scientists, sound artists, composers, theorists, and bio-acoustics.
