International Student Services and Programming

International Student Services and Programming (ISSP) provides immigration advising and advocacy as well as cultural and academic programming. ISSP assists students in maintaining their legal status while in the United States, serving as UCSC's official liaison to U.S. government agencies for immigration matters. ISSP also designs and facilitates orientation programming, events, and activities for international undergraduates, graduate students, and scholars to foster increased intercultural learning, build community, and support cultural adjustment. ISSP administers mentorship programs for international students that also serve as leadership development for international student mentors, and offers international/intercultural events open to all.

Global Initiatives

Global Initiatives manages and tracks UCSC's growing portfolio of international partnerships through GlobalConnect and works with UCSC faculty and academic departments as well as institutions abroad to identify potential partnership opportunities and develop agreements that support student and faculty international mobility, research, and recruitment. Working with academic and support units throughout campus, Global Initiatives also facilitates the implementation of a variety of new and special programs led by the Division of Global Engagement.

Support for Nationally Competitive Fellowships

The Division of Global Engagement administers the application process and provides advising for graduate study and research abroad through Nationally Competitive Fellowships. These programs include the Fulbright Program, Rhodes Scholarship, Marshall Fellowship, and Schwarzman Scholars Program.

Most of these awards require a campus endorsement before the applications can be forwarded to the final levels of competition.

Advance preparation for these awards is essential. Eligible candidates should meet with Gabi Schmiegel for assistance with applying, preparing compelling personal statements, interviewing, and developing project/program of study proposals.
