History of Consciousness

HISC 116 Reading Darwin

What is the legacy of Charles Darwin? How does he theorize the human as species? This course offers a close examination of Darwin’s role in the rise of species-thinking within the Western philosophical tradition. Students explore the complex theoretical and political implications of Darwin's ideas for discourses on gender, race, culture, and the nonhuman world. Readings center on Darwin’s original works, complemented by Kant, Feuerbach, Marx, and post-Darwinian interventions (Plessner, Grosz, Haraway, Lewontin, and others). (Formerly What is Species?)
