An experiential field/laboratory microbiology course that explores the boundaries of life inhabiting extreme environments, for example, hot springs, hypersaline and alkaline soda lakes, deserts, and volcanic ecosystems. The course includes a multi-day field trip for sample collection. Extensive laboratory work focused on culturing and isolating extremophilic microbes and characterizing their genomes and metagenomes. Students learn professional scientific communication skills such as scientific writing and presentations. It is recommended that students complete METX 100 and/or METX 150 prior to enrollment. Prerequisite(s): BIOL 20A. Enrollment is by permission of the instructor.
