University Library

The UC Santa Cruz University Library supports the research and learning needs of the campus community and has two physical locations: McHenry Library at the center of campus, and the Science & Engineering Library on “Science Hill.” The Library is an important place for many students, providing space for quiet study as well as reservable study spaces. Each library’s Information Commons offers computer workstations, scanners, and printers as well as circulating laptops.

The University Library provides access to a wide variety of scholarly resources and services to support faculty and student research and learning.

The Course Reserves service lends copies of assigned class readings and media on a short-term basis so that all students can access the course materials they need to succeed.

The Library’s Special Collections provides access to extensive rare book and archival collections, making them available to students, faculty, and the general public. Holdings include a significant collection of modern and contemporary artists’ books, the fine press, and materials reflective of the global history of the book, including examples of early printing (dating from 1340). The collection includes over 700 archival collections, documenting the history of the campus and Santa Cruz County as well as works by significant faculty and the records of the Lick Observatory (dating back to its founding in 1888). Collecting areas of note include literature, avante garde art, music, and photography, much of which can be explored via our Digital Collections portal.
