HAVC 190H Constructions of Identity in 20th c. Tibetan Visual Culture
This course on the construction of identity in modern and contemporary Tibetan visual cultures examines artworks in Tibetan communities from the early 20th century to the present. Students learn to analyze how visual mediums helped to construct different aspects of Tibetan identity. Broad themes include: the role of visual representations in constructing race, ethnicity, and gender; the impact of transnational and national politics on identity formation; and the role of imperialism and colonialism in the construction of race and ethnicity in present-day Tibet and the diaspora.
