HAVC 190Y Art and the Sea: Visualizing Knowledge and Political History in Europe and North America (1500-1900)

Seminar focusing on European and North American representations of ocean spaces, species, and human travelers made between 1500 and 1900. Students read recent scholarship on oceans, art, and science and consider an array of visual materials (including maps, oil paintings, and glass models) to ask how oceans served as the conduits for producing knowledge about the natural world and as the arenas in which arguments about national and cultural differences were staged.
