HIS 39I Social and Economic History of U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, 1848-Present

Examines the history of lived experiences and struggles throughout the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands since 1848. Examines the region’s contested legacies of settler colonialism, border imperialism, and transnational resistance from the perspective of Indigenous communities, Mexican-descended peoples, and migrant laborers. Uses historical literature, film, and primary sources to assess how these communities have responded to the region’s shifting borders and why it is significant in our contemporary political climate.
