HIS 74G Graphic Novels and Jewish History

Graphic novels are a powerful conduit for conveying historical information. Students examine a variety of graphic novels touching on Jewish historical themes and geographies, including: medieval Judeophobic persecution, crypto-Jews in the American southwest, a Sephardic boxing hero in 18th century London, the experiences of mid-20th century Algerian Jews under French colonial rule, the Holocaust both in Europe and as it touched North Africa, nostalgia for the Iraqi Jewish past, Jewish experiences in British Mandate Palestine, and more. Students gain in-depth contextualization for these works and themes, and become well-versed in major themes and debates in Jewish history.
