ANTH 196Y Archaeology and the Rise of Nationalism

How is archaeology different when it is used to perpetuate narratives that states construct of themselves? This seminar investigates the co-creation of nation states across the world and the professionalization of archaeology. Through case studies, students examine how archaeology was co-opted into the narratives of nation-building and how these processes have shaped national branding to the present.
