HISC 164 Monster Theory
Examines the shift modernity has introduced to our understanding of monstrosity and the roles and functions monsters have played in the construction of homogenous nation-states and national subjects. How did colonial projects justify themselves based on the alleged monstrosity of the Other? How have monsters come to be tools through/against which the dominant ideas of religion, science, secularism, gender, and sexuality are constructed and subverted? What are the promises of monsters? Reading theories of monsters, we see how monsters inform and unsettle our social and political imaginations. (Formerly Modern Monsters.)
